Dr Mei-Lin Tan

Bio

Urban climate scientist studying heat and cooling strategies across dense tropical cities.

Dr Mei-Lin Tan is the lab's Principal Investigator for urban climate, where she leads work on how dense tropical cities heat up and how natural infrastructure can cool them down. Her research pairs street-level measurement with climate modelling to show planners exactly where canopy, green corridors, and water bodies earn their place.

Before joining Nanyang Technological University she spent a decade building heat-resilience evidence across Southeast Asia, working closely with city agencies to turn microclimate data into design requirements rather than afterthoughts. Her studies on daytime cooling under mature urban canopy now inform greening targets in several regional capitals.

She supervises a growing group of postdoctoral researchers and PhD candidates, and is committed to translating rigorous science into plain guidance that policymakers and the public can act on.
